The latest in my long list of lexical obsessions was the word ‘dupe.’ According to Mr Internet and his merry band of wordy websites, ‘dupe’ is derived from hoopoe – a bird which is thought to be especially stupid. Known for it’s erratic, inebriated butterfly style of flying, it’s propensity to get caught easily and it’s distinctively unkempt crown of bright orange feathers, it didn’t take a genius to note the similarities between that bird and this one. All it took was my Prince Charming, much to my chagrin. Sadly, I had to remind him I do not suffer fools gladly.
